Jain, a 1984 batch IPS officer from Assam and Meghalaya cadre, was asked to "proceed on a tour to headquarters pending transfer", official sources said in New Delhi. No replacement for the post has been announced.

While there was no reason given out for this move, sources in the know claimed that his functioning was hampered by some state police officials resulting in heated exchanges at various meetings.

The Centre was also contemplating replacing Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) Shiv Mohan Sahai and the likely change could be his counterpart in Jammu K Rajendra Kumar.

The changes come within hours of late night protests in Srinagar and adjoining Badgam district where people were asked to assemble on roads to protest against the killing of 21 people including Hurriyat leader Sheikh Aziz.
