ALLAHABAD'S INDIAN Institute of Information Technology (IIIT-A) is going to launch a BTech course in Electronics and Communications Engineering from July 2006. Admission to the 60-seat course will be carried out on the basis of the All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE)-2006 scores.
"We have decided to start the new BTech programme after realising the potential and the need for well-trained Electronics and Communication Engineers in the country. We carried out a comprehensive study after appointing a high level committee comprising of all Deans and course co-ordinators of IIIT-A besides two eminent experts of IIT-Kanpur's Computer Science and Engineering Department Prof Amitabh Bhattacharya and Prof HC Karnick," informed Dr MD Tiwari, Director, IIIT-A.
After the start of this BTech (Electronics and Communications Engineering) course, the total number of degree courses being offered by IIIT-A— a centre of excellence in IT established by the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1999 and conferred the Deemed University status by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2000— will go up to seven with a BTech programme in Information Technology, separate MTech courses in Bio Informatics, Intelligent Systems, Software Engineering, Wireless Communication and Computing besides a Masters Programme in Cyber Law and Information Systems.
"With an aim to make the course effective we have incorporated all the basic and finer virtues of the subject related to the communication and technology era. The course will impart knowledge in analog and digital transmission and reception of data, voice and video, basic electronics, solid state devices, microprocessors, digital and analog communication, analog integrated circuits, satellite communication, microwave engineering, antennae and wave progression besides other topics," Dr Tiwari said.

{{/usCountry}}He said that as the communication also requires societal values and human aspects also, important topics of humanities especially sociology too have been incorporated in the new course. "Moreover as India is lagging in the field of hardware expertise, we have decided to stress upon providing our students the requisite knowledge of the field also," Dr Tiwari added.
He informed that all the necessary preparations have already been made at the institute for the course to begin from July 2006. "We have upgraded our digital electronics lab and funds are ready for procuring any necessary extra equipment that may be needed," Dr Tiwari added.
