THE INDIAN Institute of Information Technology-Allahabad (IIIT-A) has taken up the task of establishing a state-of-the art institute of micro-engineering . This was stated by IIIT-A director Dr MD Tewari here on Monday.

He said the ambitious project, is likely to see the light of day in the academic session of 2007-2008. It will be established with a budget of Rs 25 crore. The funds will be raised from the Indo-Swiss joint IT Forum.
“Micro-engineering refers to the technologies and practice of making three-dimensional structures and devices with dimensions in the order of micrometers.
The two constructional technologies of micro-engineering are micro-electronics and micromachining. Micro-electronics, producing electronic circuitry on silicon chips, is a very well developed technology. Micromachining is the name for the techniques used to produce the structures and moving parts of micro-engineered devices,” said Dr Tiwari while elaborating on the term micro engineering. He said the main goals of the Institute of Micro-Engineering would to be able to integrate micro-electronic circuitry into micro-machined structures, to produce completely integrated systems (microsystems). Such systems could have the same advantages of low cost, reliability and small size as silicon chips produced in the microelectronics industry. Dr. Tiwari maintained that since IT was the core area of research and competenc for the institute, the emphasis would be on the design aspect of engineering which involves computer aided modeling , restructuring and simulation .
He also said hardware problems could be solved by collaboration with hardware rich countries like Singapore. A panel of experts, consisting of senior faculty members of the institute and others have been formed to finalise the structure and function of the proposed institute. In this regard, a meeting has already taken place in New Delhi. The establishment of the institute will require procurement of highly sophisticated equipment and instruments, faculty members and well-furnished premises. Dr Tiwari said modalities and final contours of the institute will be chalked out in a meeting to be held soon. “A delegation of Swiss authorities and IT experts led by Dr Pramod Rastogi will visit India on November 7 to discusses issues related with core research areas and funding .
