The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Delhi will soon set up an innovation centre to give its students the freedom to try out new things and ideas, free from the trappings of syllabus and curriculum.
The premier institute is all ready to set up a centre with funding from alumni and the ministry of human resource development that will give students the opportunity to explore ideas and innovations beyond the classroom.
“We want to give the students a chance to work on their ideas outside the classroom, beyond the constant pressure of grades and assignments. We want to give them space and freedom to innovate,” said RK Shevgaonkar, director, IIT Delhi.
The institute is also working on their curriculum to include 20 credits for work outside the curriculum. “Students will be given the flexibility to choose from other disciplines and engineering disciplines. They will also be free to choose topics from the social sciences,” he added. Shevgaonkar was speaking at the preview of the 9th open house that showcases students’ innovations. The exhibit will be thrown open to public on Saturday.
This year, more than 500 projects will be on display. Some of these include projects on saving crucial technology and precious items from harm during earthquakes, a multi-purpose wheelchair, a biochip for testing milk purity and a technology for fresh and cool garments. The multi-purpose wheelchair, made by the applied mechanics department, will make Western toilets more accessible to users. It also has an adjustable seat that can give the user elevation and can help them access things at a height of up to 7 feet.
