INDIAN INSTITUTE of Technology (IIT-K) has geared up to check any act amounting to ragging causing physical or mental harassment to new students. The new students for the undergraduate courses are to arrive here from August 2 to August 7.

Talking to Hindustan Times Dean of Student Affairs (DOSA) Dr Prawal Sinha said a meeting to evolve a strategy to check ragging was called on July25. Meanwhile, letters were issued to the parents of the senior students asking them to tell their wards not to take part in ragging activities to avoid legal action.
He said the parents were told that in case any student was caught ragging new students he could be expelled from the institute or heavily penalised and his career could be affected. Besides, notices were also put up at conspicuous places in the institute to create awareness about the penalties that could be imposed on the erring students and the possible consequences of taking part in ragging activities. More intensified measures would be decided at the meeting, he said.
Dr Sinha said about 600 post-graduate students had arrived at the institute by Sunday evening and they were accommodated in the hostels. These students have no problem of ragging and hence no measures to check ragging were introduced.
