As a trial of the system started on Monday between Kanpur and Allahabad railway stations, Prof NS Vyas of the Mechanical Engineering Department of IIT said the device would be kept at the engine of the train, which would provide its location and speed between two stations.

He said the system could be connected with the computer network at the enquiry office at the stations and the location and speed of trains could be displayed on screens at the platform. Any individual could also gather information about the movement of the train through the Internet, Vyas said.

He said another similar test of the system was undergoing between Chennai and Chidambaram railway stations with the help of a private party in collaboration with the Railways.

He said the plasma screen would display the location of the train along with the time enabling passengers to calculate the exact time of the train arrivals.

Initially, the system was being tested in a range of 200 kms. Because of this, the Allahabad-Kanpur track was selected. Trials were carried out on seven trains on Monday.
