Dean of Student Affairs Dr Prawal Sinha confirmed the incident and said the institute may now engage professional counsellors to check the rising trend.

The IIT Kanpur, in fact, is in process of soul searching after two students — Swapnil Dharasker and Shailesh Sharma — ended their lives in less than six months. . The alleged suicide attempt by Raunaq Garg, a first year student of mathematics and statistics, has only aggravated the problems of the IIT mandarins who looked to be on the backfoot.

Raunaq was admitted to the Regency Hospital (registration no 2348) at 12.37 am on May 6 with serious injuries around his wrists and the arm. He was treated at a semi private ward of the hospital by plastic surgeon Dr SK Gulati and consultant psychiatrist Dr Alok Vajpayee.

He was discharged from the hospital on Sunday noon and was taken to Mumbai by his parents.

But sources revealed the boy was emotionally worked up soon after he met someone senior on the campus on Saturday evening.

Fellow students of Hall number II noticed him behaving erratically and instantly informed the members of institute counselling service. When the counselling service team tried to know the reason for his incoherent behaviour, he grew violent, said eyewitnesses.
