Had senior faculty members not dissuaded the students, we might have had -- for the first time in IIT-Delhi’s history -- a mass protest, which would have meant total disruption of classes. For the time being, the students have homed in on an online protest.
Teachers and students felt taking to the streets would not be in keeping with the IITians’ dignity. Till Thursday evening, the Students’ Affairs Council, the apex students’ body, was busy contemplating the best-possible option to register protest.
But finally, they have settled for “special online petition” that calls upon all IITians and IIT alumni to register their opposition to quotas.
The student representatives will present the petition, that has already been signed around 800 IITians in less then 24 hours, to the President, the PM and the Chief Justice of India this Saturday.
“Representatives from the medical field came to meet us on Thursday, and wanted us to join hands in the common cause. But it was the view of some of our senior faculty members that coming out on the streets was not dignified enough for the IITians, and that there were still better options available with us to register our protest,” Gazal Kalra, general secretary of Students Affairs Council.
Since last week, students have been coming up with all kinds of ideas to register their protests. An SMS that called for an organised mass bunking of classes was doing rounds. Some immediately supported the idea while others called it useless. “The divisions meant that the idea was dropped,” said Brijesh Kumar of the Academic Interaction Council.
