IF THERE is one thing worse than spending hours looking for a suitable parking spot it is to find the vehicle missing upon your return. Certainly, it is the fear of theft that leads scores of City motorists to submit to usurious, uncouth parking lot attendants.
Although the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) tried to cut down on overcharging by proposing yearly passes under the new parking policy, slated to come into effect from April 1, concerns about vehicular safety remained.
Now, the civic body is moving to offer theft insurance cover along with the annual parking passes in a bid to allay motorists’ concerns. The insurance sweetener is expected to lead to an appreciable hike in the number of parking pass subscribers resulting in increased revenue collections for the Corporation.
Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma on Wednesday directed market officials to look into fiscal modalities of offering insurance cover to pass holders at a meeting to review preparations for the new parking regime.
Mayor-in-Council member in-charge of the Market Department Shanta Jhanwar and Additional Municipal Commissioner Kumar Purushottam were among those present at the meeting.
Sharma instructed officials to distribute pamphlets detailing all aspects of the annual parking pass system at all main markets as well as important thoroughfares so that information about the scheme could reach the widest number of people. Signposts should also be put up surance cover at each of the Corporation’s 12 zone offices, he added.

{{/usCountry}}Under the annual pass system, motorists will be allowed to station their vehicles at any of 21 IMC-owned parking lots in return for a one-time yearly payment. The total capacity of the selected parking lots is estimated to stand at 2,000 with 400 for cars and the remaining 1,600 for scooters.
Passes for four-wheeled vehicles will cost Rs 440 while those for two-wheeled vehicles would be priced at Rs 220. Non-pass holders will have to shell out Rs 25 and Rs 15 per day as parking charges.

Municipal Commissioner Vinod Sharma: As vehicular safety at parking lots is a major concern we are probing a proposal to provide theft insurance cover. The insurance will be provided either free of cost or at a very slight addition to the cost of the pass.
Tenders for printing the parking passes, which will be similar to the plastic City bus passes, have been invited today and the bids are to be opened a week from now.
