The IMC move comes in the wake of punitive action by the Deputy Registrar of Co-operative Societies which cancelled the society’s registration earlier this year.

According to Corporation sources the Deputy Commissioner, Colony Cell issued orders revoking the Sangh’s recognition a few days ago. The decision to sideline Natraj Rehwasi Sangh finally brings the curtain down on an eight-year-old controversy that eventually saw the matter reaching the courts.

It all began in the late 90’s when a plot of land at Annapurna Road was colonised by Umesh Housing Co-operative Society. The IMC issued clearance to the colony and building permissions started to be issued in ’98.

However, in 2000 a Building Permission official refused to approve site plans as development work had not been carried out by the coloniser.

In its reply the Corporation pleaded guilty and admitted that issuing building permissions in the area was a “mistake”. The civic body, however, added that it was willing to sanction construction if development tasks were carried out by the coloniser.

It was at this point that Natraj Rehwasi Sangh came forward claiming to represent persons owning plots at the Annapurna Road Colony. This elicited strong protests from the coloniser, Umesh Housing Co-operative Society which claimed that the Sangh had no locus standi as none of its members actually owned any land in the concerned colony.

The coloniser appealed to the Deputy Registrar, Co-operative Societies who upheld the plea and cancelled the Rehwasi Sangh’s registration.
