Train services were disrupted on the Western Railway from 8 am to 9.30 am between Borivli and Virar after a technical fault at Bhayander.

The pantograph (a device that draws power from overhead wires) got entangled with overhead wire, resulting in breakage of insulator supplying electricity.

“An empty rake was going to Bhayander station from the yard when the incident occurred. No one was injured,” said chief public relations officer, Western Railway, S. Gupta.

This was a new age train and was on its way to Bhayander.

The incident led to cancellation of about 20 trains and those running were late by more than 20 minutes.

At least six outstation trains had to halt at all stations between Virar and Borivli to allow commuters to reach Borivli. “We will conduct an inquiry,” added Gupta.

Within 12 hours, Western Railway services were affected again in the evening.

The situation was restored by 7.13 pm, but trains were delayed.
