“At 10.45 a.m., Pravin and his friend Ganesh Chavan (19) were travelling in a local train from Kalwa to CST, with plans to alight at Chinchpokli station, the nearest from Lalbaug on the central line, when the mishap occurred,” said Senior Inspector Dilip Gore of Kurla Government Railway Police (GRP) station.

Chavan rushed him to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar, from where he was transferred to Sion Hospital, where he died,” Gore said.

Pravin was the last of six accidental deaths reported at Kurla GRP station in 24 hours. While four died trying to cross the railway tracks, Pravin died after falling from a train and another victim died due to natural causes.

The five other victims included senior citizen Agnes Cornellius (70), of Kopri, Thane (East), who died crossing the tracks near platform 4 of Mulund railway station.

His internal organs have been sent to the forensic laboratory at Kalina to establish the cause of death. The fifth case was a 65-year-old unidentified man run over by the Dadar-Ratnagiri Express between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations.

Additional Director General of Police (Railways) Raj Khilnani said the high number of accidental deaths resulted from the fact that people preferred to take the short cut – crossing the tracks instead of using the bridge.
