If something bothers me, I ask God to give me signs and there have been times when He?s communicated with me, says Meyhar Bhasin, a senior model.

There are so many rituals that people follow in order to appease God: fasts, offerings, prayers, but for me this just doesn’t work. I feel that whatever we get is what He has planned for us. Why force Him to grant you something that was never meant for you? There can be no end to greed and I’m sure He knows what he’s doing.

Born and brought up as a Sikh, religion has always occupied the highest position in our household. Having studied in Guru Harkishen Public School, reading and writing Punjabi comes to me naturally.

My mother has been a devout believer and the culture of sewa at the Gurudwara was instilled in us right from childhood. Even now I make it a point to visit the Bangla Saheb Gurudwara once a week with my mom. I am a very bad chef so I can’t possibly go and cook there but I try to fill in all the raw materials for the langar (community lunch).

But at the same time I’ve never been fanatic about religion. In fact, every religion is very close to my heart. If I happen to pass by any place of worship, I have to pay my respects to Him. My favourite place of worship is the Bihariji temple at Vrindavan, which I love to visit with friends. Likewise, whenever I stop over at Paris, I always put the St. Joseph’s church, with its gothic walls and ancient architecture, on my itinerary.

Religion is my private affair and I am in a constant dialogue with Him. If there’s something that bothers me, I ask Him to give me signs and there have been times when He’s communicated with me through simple annotations such as a mail or a phone call. This is one area of life wherein my trust in Him is blind, totally honest. Somewhere deep within I know that He can bring no harm to me.

Holi, Christmas and New Year are times that call for special celebrations. These are the moments that I reserve for my family and relatives. Whatever the situation I know I can fall back on the Almighty. Be it rich or poor, everyone gets a fair hearing in His court.
