There are no buyers of raddi in Britain, unlike in India. It would otherwise have been a very lucrative business for such dealers and a source of good money for those who buy newspapers, all thick and weighty.
Instead, newspapers are like other trash collected over days and packed in black bags to be put into waste bins or put outside to be collected by refuse lorries of councils in each borough.
A total of 29 million tons of trash is collected every year. Most of the items that can be recycled are taken to plants all over the country with such facilities. There are 111 recycling plants which process 150,000 tons of waste a year.
There is however a huge shortage of processing facilities. What happens then?
Newsprints are sent to China, India and Indonesia while plastics are shipped to Germany. China takes a lot of the newsprint which it can recycle at a fraction of the price it would cost in Europe. A report in a Sunday paper said India is another destination for the 4.6 million tons of newspapers, British homes put out for recycling every year.
The consumption is far more than the British paper mills can cope with.
