Series between Australia and India are on the way to rivalling the Ashes as cricket's most famous matches, Australian captain Steve Waugh said on Thursday.
Australia and India have played two riveting series in the past three years with their 2001 three Tests regarded as one of the best in history.
This series is set to go down to the wire, with India going up 1-0 in Adelaide before Australia levelled in Melbourne.
Waugh, who is playing his 168th and last Test before retirement, said India's increasing strength and the reliable "infrastructure" of Australian cricket means many more gripping series in the future.
"The platform is there," Waugh said ahead of the fourth Test in Sydney.
"The last two series have been phenomenal. India are going to be a very strong force in world cricket for a long time to come ... so there's no reason why India and Australia can't really get something special in the future together.
"The Border Gavaskar Trophy will hopefully be as famous as the Ashes one day."
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly agreed the two countries were headed for a great rivalry but had reservations that India-Australia contests could generate the emotion of the Ashes or the intensity of a Pakistan-India encounter.
