With crackdown on pro-democracy activists in Nepal continuing, India on Wednesday said the use of "repressive measures" could undermine the prospects of resolving the "crisis" in the Himalayan Kingdom through "genuine" process of dialogue and reconciliation.
External Affairs Ministry said the recent turn of events had undermined the political stability in Nepal and hoped King Gyanendra would realise the seriousness of the situation.
"We are deeply concerned over the turn of events which have undermined political stability and have also seriously affected the economy of Nepal," External Affairs Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters in New Delhi reacting to developments in the last few days in the Himalayan Kingdom.
The royal government has launched a crackdown against pro-democracy movement which was launched on April 6.
As part of government actions, police have used force and clamped curfew besides arresting hundreds of pro-democracy activists and journalists.
Sarna said India has always maintained that the current crisis in Nepal can be resolved only through a "genuine process of dialogue and reconciliation. The resort to repressive measures by the government in Nepal can only undermine prospects for this process."
He said India hoped that "in view of the seriousness of the situation", the royal government of Nepal will make "genuine effort" to initiate a dialogue with the political parties at the earliest.
