India has been elected to three United Nations bodies - the Commission of Status of Women, Coordination Board of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and 58-member Governing Council of the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-HABITAT).
In the elections held on Wednesday, 54-members Economic and Social Council elected India on three of its subsidiary bodies by acclamation.
Also elected on the Commission of Status of Women were the US, Russia, China, Sweden, Eritrea, Senegal, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Their term will begin when the Commission meets for its 53rd session next year and end at the close of 56th session in 2012. Elected along with India on the Board of the UNHAIDS were the US, Russia, Ethiopia, Mauritania, Guatemala and Monaco.
Italy was elected to an outstanding vacancy from Western States and others Group. The Council decided to postpone the election of one member from the Asian group for want of candidate.
Sri Lanka, Germany, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Swaziland, Zambia, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia along with India were elected on the Governing Council of UN-HABIAT for a four year term beginning on January one next.
The 54-member Council is the principal organ coordinating socio-economic and related work of the 14 United Nations specialized agencies, 10 functional commissions and five regional commissions.
