India has legitimate claim for permanent seat: PM

He said that there was a growing recognition about this, but also admitted that there could be hindrances.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said India had a 'legitimate' claim for a permanent seat in the United Nation Security Council.

He said that there was a growing recognition worldwide about this, but also admitted that there could be hindrances.

"There is growing recognition by virtue of our commitment, potential and performance," he said, but added that there can be "some difficulties on the way".

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world, and has been reaching out to various countries in terms of establishing linkages, he added.

Singh referred to India's growing relations with countries across the world, particularly the US, ASEAN, China, Singapore, Thailand, South Africa and Brazil.
