The Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC) has raised $1,30,000 to set up an 'India House' in Canada's financial capital Toronto, which would help accelerate trade and investment between both countries.
"The proposed centre would encourage Indo-Canadians to become partners in the progress of India and also help them in distress," ICCC president Ajit Khanna said after presenting the awards at the 8th Annual Golf Classic Tournament on Saturday.
The centre would promote India in Canada and provide assistance to Non-Resident Indians who wish to invest in or contribute in some way to the economic development of India, Khanna said.
"We are discussing the proposal with various Indian businesses, tourism, banking, air carrier and other organisations: both in public and private sector so that overseas Indians or Canadians who wish to invest in India could get information at one place, and could take advantage of India's liberalised regime," he said.
Anil Shah, the chief organiser of the event who mooted this idea three years back, said the centre would act as an "information and cultural hub" and provide a "sense of self respect and identity" to the Indo-Canadian community.
It will educate them about business opportunities, and various facets of emerging India, so as to forge a long lasting relationship between them and their native country, he said.
