India will harness its solidarity with the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and convince other member countries to take "coherent and stronger" position on UN reforms and expansion of the Security Council at a meeting of the group to be held in Kuala Lumpur beginning on May 27.
The ministerial meeting of the coordinating bureau of the NAM, to be held in Putrajaya, will focus on creating "a more dynamic and cohesive movement" to take positions on major international issues, including the Iranian nuclear controversy, and make a stronger pitch for a bigger say in the management of the UN.
"Various proposals for rejuvenating the NAM will be discussed," official sources said.
Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma will lead the Indian delegation, comprising Permanent Representative to UN Nirupam Sen, KC Singh, additional secretary in the external affairs ministry and other senior Indian officials to this crucial ministerial meeting that comes ahead of the NAM summit to be held in Havana on September 15-16.
The meeting will also discuss the selection of an Asian candidate for the position of the UN Secretary General.
"The NAM is united on the need for the UN reforms and the expansion of the Security Council. There are some differences on what shape reforms will take, but there is a broad unanimity on a greater say for developing countries in this 114-member grouping," sources said.
