“THE POLICY makers should not blindly follow the advice of the World Bank and the IMF in the education sector,” said eminent academician Prof Yashpal.
He was speaking at the LMA workshop on ‘Improving Education and Health Delivery Systems’ held in the city.
Prof Yashpal said high sounding words like ‘reforms’ would mean little if the quality of life of the poor didn’t improve. “I fail to understand that when crores of rupees can be spent on Defense and activities like Commonwealth Games, why can’t the same money be diverted to educating the masses,” he said. “The government says it would cost huge amount of money. So what? Spend it if you do not want the future of the country to be mortgaged,” he added.
Taking a dig at managers, he said India needed good leaders. “Some of our greatest leaders never attended a business school. Yet, they managed brilliantly. I think it is important to have a vision,” he said. It was on Prof Yashpal’s PIL against mushrooming of universities in Chattisgarh that the Supreme Court declared them null and void.
Speaking on the occasion, Aseem Chauhan, additional president of Ritnand Balved Education Foundation, which manages the Amity chain of institutions, said that it needed a change of mindset to provide quality education. “Private partnership in education is the answer. I think private universities far outnumber the government ones in the US, Japan and other developed countries,” he added.
