It’s not Italian, Mexican or Chinese, but Indian food, which is the clear winner at the Commonwealth Games Village. “Tandoori rotis and paranthas are very popular among the athletes. Other tandoori items like chicken tikka and paneer tikka are also quickly wiped off the plates,” says Ashok Kumar, who is incharge of operations at the village.

The spicy golgappa is another hot snack on the block. Served at the Indian street food corner that also offers chaat and bhel puri, it has many takers. “The players are really curious about what’s being sold at this counter. They are crazy for golgappa,” says Ajay Grover, catering consultant at the Games village.

Most of the dishes at the Indian counter are Punjabi. “But since the international athletes do not like too much spice and oil, we have softened the preparations to suit their palate. The flavours and aroma are, however, intact,” says Jatinder Uppal, executive chef. There are also other delicacies that the participants vouch for. “I love the lamb curry at the Indian counter. I also like the dal and rice combination,” says Glenn Warfe, an Australian badminton player.
