India's Green House Gas (GHG) emissions are among the lowest in the world in per-capita terms and the principal responsiblity for the problem of climate change lies with the developed countries, Minister of Science and Technology Kapil Sibal said in New Delhi.
"Although, the trends in emissions are expected to increase in the future, it is very difficult to estimate the exact amounts from different nations as they essentially depend on various factors," he told the Lok Sabha.
Climate change is a global environmental problem, the principal responsibility for which lies with the developed countries and not with the developing countries such as India, he said.
In various international negotiations such as the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), India along with other G-77 countries took a stand that as per Kyoto Protocol, developed countries should make further commitments for mitigation as soon as possible, he added.
"However, India is engaged with the international climate change regime, including the UNFCCC and the Kyoto Protocol and various partnerships involving other countries under the UNFCCC," Sibal said.
