Prem Shankar Jha in Walk the talk (May 21) errs in saying that the Kashmir issue and the peace talks between Pakistan and India are really between Musharraf and India. Pakistan’s status is that of a complainant in the issue of Kashmir. But the General has his own compulsions to push for such talks. He has received concessions from India, which enhance his USP at home. Contrary to Jha’s opinion, India is better off without such talks.

Pakistan is witnessing a public outcry. This is not the right time for India to take charge of any peace negotiation between the two States. Pakistan is a disturbed State now and if India initiates any negotiations, the result is going to be a failure.

Prem Shankar Jha credits Pervez Musharraf with many firsts but does not spell out the areas where India has failed. If Jha wants India to act on Pakistan, he is mistaken, because no sovereign country would be naïve as to part with its territorial rights. All the out-of- box solutions run counter to India’s interests.

Mayawati’s electoral performance in UP is commendable in more ways than one. She has successfully tried to integrate all sections of society. In contrast, the grand old party is still obsessed with OBC and minority voters. It is time the Congress refashioned its approach towards reservations.

Lessons learnt

The report Many students, so few teachers (May 21) is a real problem but the situation is not that alarming. The government’s guidelines that engineering colleges must have a teacher for every 15 students have no justification and must be modified. It is impossible for engineering colleges to meet this ratio.
