New Delhi has said it will do whatever possible to minimise the damage caused by the alleged hacking of its computers at the Indian embassy in Washington.
Canadian researchers have spotted a spying operation, allegedly run by Chinese hackers, that has infiltrated 1,295 computers in 103 countries, including the Indian embassy in Washington.
“The report says computers in 103 countries have been infiltrated. Of the four servers, three were in China and one in the US,” said Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon. He, however, said there was no proof to link it to the Chinese government. Calling it a “reality of the world where we all use cyberspace”, Menon said, “New Delhi will do whatever is required to prevent such incidents.”
On resumption of dialogue with Pakistan, Menon said, “We have always avoided setting down a timeframe. We want to see credible action against the infrastructure of terrorism in its territory.”
The Foreign Secretary said the situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan will come up for discussion when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh meets US President Barack Obama next week in London.
Reacting to the recently announced US strategy on Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Ministry of External Affairs spokesman said, “We welcome the clear expression of will to carry through the struggle against extremism in Afghanistan and its roots in Pakistan as contained in the strategy. India has direct interest in the success of this effort and is ready to play a constructive role as a responsible power."
