There are some less obvious reasons why diplomats who have had a stint in India jump at the mention of an India trip. After all who would not want to stock up on some essentials, like fine business suits and visiting cards at half the price and time.
“Paucity of time, tight schedules and short trips notwithstanding foreign bureaucrats don’t often miss the chance to get their favourite custom-tailored and hand-stitched suits,” said an official working in an embassy on condition of anonymity.
“There are many tailors in the city who deliver suits with the perfect fitting in the shortest possible time. They come to the embassy in the morning to take measurements and deliver the suits by evening. Many diplomats take as many as four to five suits in one go,” the official said.
“Infact, we have even started to identify some of them because every time they are here they would ask for a tailor,”
another official said.
“The demand is high and the quality is the best they would get as we use the same Italian fabric. What they would get back home for anything above $1000 is available here for as much as $150- 250,” said Umang Vaish of D Vaish and Sons, Connaught Place (CP).
“Our foreign clients mainly come for the custom-tailored hand-stitched suits. The readymade once are easily available abroad,” said the proprietor of Vaderas Men’s Wear in CP. Such is his dedicated clientele, he said, that they often send suits by courier to various countries.
