Indian American bags second place in Brain Bee
Sanat Sethi won the second place in the 2007 International Brain Bee competition.
An Indian American student won the second place in the 2007 International Brain Bee competition hosted by the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Sanat Sethi, a Class 10 student from West Essex High School, New Jersey, last month bagged the honour in the competition that tests the neuroscience knowledge of high school students.
This year's competition drew 32 contestants, including representatives from India, Australia and Canada, according to a statement received from his father.
"Biology is arguably the most important science. If we don't understand how life works, how can we improve it?" Sanat, a science student, said after winning the prize.
The Brain Bee was established in 1998 and has become an established part of Brain Awareness Week, an advocacy programme of the Society for Neuroscience. It is a live question and answer competition.
Young men and women compete to determine who is the 'best brain' on such topics as intelligence, memory, emotions, sensations, movement, stress, aging, sleep, addiction, Alzheimer's, and stroke.
"This competition is mainly to motivate them to open up a book about the human brain and read it and to inspire them to consider a career in neuroscience," said Norbert Myslinski, a University of Maryland Dental professor who developed the contest as part of his quest to boost interest among young people.
