It is not often that India's famed batsmen end up with an average of less than 28 in a full-fledged Test series but the four-match rubber against Australia amply reflected the collective failure of the stars.

Barring Virender Sehwag, who averaged 42.71, none of the frontline batsmen had figures to boast of with captain Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman all failing to put up consistent performances with the bat.
The stylish VVS Laxman, who had been Australia's nemesis in the last two series, could muster just 123 runs from seven innings at an apalling average of 17.57. Had it not been for his only half-century of the series he scored in the last match, the figures would have been far more embarrassing.
Dravid, regarded as 'The Wall', scored 167 runs from seven innings for an average of 27.83.
Ganguly and Tendulkar, who played only two matches each because of injuries, finished with an average of 19.66 and 17.50 respectively.
Australia's debutant Michael Clarke had the honour of topping both batting and bowling averages list. He finished with a healthy batting average of 57.14, compiling 400 runs which included a career-best 151. His six for nine in Mumbai match also meant that he ended up with an average of 2.16. Damien Martyn had the highest run aggregate of 444 runs.
