Dr Satya Vrat Sharma, who hails from Hisar in Haryana, has been conferred with the Order of the British Empire for his contribution in rendering meritorious service to the national healthcare services, an official spokesman said in Chandigarh on Wednesday.
Queen Elizabeth II on Tuesday conferred upon him the prestigious award at Buckingham Palace, London, he said.
Dr Sharma is the son of freedom fighter and journalist, late Kok Chandra Shastri.
The physician, who did his post-graduation in general medicine from the Medical College, Rohtak, immigrated to the UK in 1977 and joined the National Health Service.
He is the Chairman of Wolverhampton division of the British Medical Association (BMA), Chairman of the local Medical Committee and Vice-chairman of regional council of the BMA, West Midlands.
Dr Sharma was the first Asian to be appointed police surgeon at Wolverhampton. He is a founder-member of the committee in Wolverhampton that generates funds for the prevention of coronary heart diseases.
Dr Sharma, a British citizen now, has established a charitable trust that awards grants to poor students all over India.
