An Indian maid in Bahrain, who fled her sponsor's home following "mistreatment," is stranded, as she cannot leave the country without a no-objection document.
Saith Ummer Saral Beevi, 43, who first arrived in Bahrain four years ago, said she ran away from her sponsor's house after a year due to mistreatment. However, her passport and other documents are in still with the sponsor.
Beevi was later issued an emergency out pass by the Indian Embassy, but local immigration officials insisted that she couldn't leave the country until her sponsor signs a no-objection document for her departure.
She is currently being offered an accommodation by the Bahrain Keraleeya Samajam charity committee at its premises in Manama.
"It is not with the intention of becoming rich that I came here, but only to feed my paralysed husband and three daughters - the eldest being mentally retarded," she told the Gulf Daily News.
Indian Ambassador in Bahrain Balkrishna Shetty said "we are doing everything on our part to help her. Meanwhile, she will have to wait and comply with (rules of) the immigration department."
