A 50-year-old man who was found unconscious in Manama on July 31 and admitted to a hospital, has been identified as Surjit Singh Bedi, an Indian national.
Following an appeal by the hospital's social service wing and Ecumenical Conference of Charity volunteer M E G Coorey, Bedi's friends and his Bahraini landlord made the identification.
Earlier, medical tests had shown that the patient was an alcoholic.
"When he first came in, he had long hair like a woman and a very long beard," one of the nurses was quoted as saying. "This made us think he could be a Sikh.
"He sometimes moves and opens his eyes but that does not mean he is awake," explained the nurse. She said doctors were not sure how long he would remain in this state.
According to Indian community leader and Surya Charitable and Cultural Association general secretary K R Nair, the Indian mission in Bahrain has taken charge of the case.
The help of immigration authorities in Bahrain has also been sought, for further information about the Sikh man.
"When the room was inspected, we were not able to find any documents which could give us more information on him," Nair said. He added that Bedi's passport was not with him.
