The government proposes to set up the Indian Maritime University (IMU) at Chennai, involving an estimated expenditure of Rs 700 crore, to upgrade skills of the country’s other maritime personnel.

Road transport and highways and shipping minister TR Baalu said the IMU, to be established by an Act of Parliament, would comprise the four government training institutes, which are at present under the umbrella of Indian Institutes of Maritime Studies, Mumbai, and the National Institute of Port Management, Chennai.

“In all, these five campuses will form the proposed IMU,” he said, adding that Rs 300 crore would be required for establishing the proposed university.
