Indian entrepreneurs Vikram Akula, founder of SKS Microfinance, and Sameer Sawarkar of Neurosynaptic Comm are among the 10 South Asian-origin persons to be awarded the 2006 Global Indus Technovators Awards by the Indian Business Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Akula and Sawarkar are winners in the grassroots category.

Akula, founder of SKS Microfinance — one of the fastest growing microfinance organizations in the world — has been felicitated for providing over $33 million in loans and helping over 300,000 people become economically self-reliant. Sawarkar works in the areas of remote medical diagnostics and telemedicine.
