Suharto, 84, was hospitalised two weeks ago for colon surgery and has undergone several minor operations since then.

He started bleeding internally again late on Monday, Djoko Rahardjo told a news conference.

"Doctors are doing what they can to stop the bleeding," he said. "But the situation appears to be more critical than it was on Monday."

Suharto, who ruled Indonesia with an iron fist until he was ousted from power in 1998, was indicted in 2000 on charges of embezzling US$600 million (euro470 million) in state funds.

The country's attorney general this month said proceedings against him had been abandoned, angering critics who blame the former strongman for hundreds of thousands of deaths.
