At the temple compound, a UNESCO World Heritage site that suffered significant damage in Saturday's deadly quake, he comforted those who lost family members in the disaster, ElShinta radio said.

Later in the day, he was to tour other locations in the quake zone, including a hospital in Klaten district east of Yogyakarta, one of the areas hardest hit, the state Antara news agency said.

More than 5,400 people were killed and thousands more injured in the 6.3-magnitude quake, which struck Indonesia's main island of Java at dawn on Saturday.
