INDORE DISTRICT continues to report the maximum number of AIDS cases in Madhya Pradesh, and going by the December 2005 figures released by the MP State AIDS Control Society, of the 53 new cases reported in the State 15 have been reported from Indore. Ujjain comes a distant second with seven cases during the month followed by Khargone, where six cases have been reported in the month.
Year 2005 also saw the maximum number of cases being reported in the State so far – 359 - in one year. Overall also, of the total 1,662 AIDS cases (since 1988) reported in the State, 485 (29.1 per cent) of the cases have been reported in Indore, followed by Ujjain where 294 (17.6 per cent) cases have been reported followed by Jabalpur where 113 (6.7 per cent) cases have been reported.
In 95 cases (5.7 per cent), the person has come from other states. Despite attempts by the authorities to spread information about safe sex, sexual route still is the most frequent mode of transmission of the disease.
Of the total number of cases, 63 per cent are sexually transmitted, followed by blood transmission (which stands at 16 per cent), while prenatal transmission is three per cent and infected needles account for one per cent. In 17 per cent of the cases, the exact reason is not known.
The number of reported cases is also on a steady rise. While in year 2000, the number of cases reported was 127, it was 156 in 2001, 156 in 2002, 145 in 2003, 205 in 2004 and it jumped to 359 in 2005.

{{/usCountry}}Commenting on the fact that highest number of cases was reported from Ujjain, doctors associated with the programme said that Indore happens to have the best medical facilities and many of people from neighbouring districts also come for treatment here.
