Just when the City was coming to terms with chikungunya, another disease – caused by the same aedes agyptis mosquito – dengue started spreading in all nook and corners of the City.

Even when the health authorities are continuously denying any cases of dengue, calling the only death till date in the city due to “suspected dengue” hundreds of patients are being treated at various private hospitals and nursing homes.

But this is not all. Warns a doctor, without wanting to be quoted, “even if the Health Authorities are sleeping, we cannot overlook the fact that there has been a tremendous rise in number of cases of malaria, encephalitis and more serious diseases than dengue and chikungunya.”

Says a doctor at City’s Gokuldas Hospital, “The civic authorities are not bothered about the increased dirt, increased mosquitoes and also, highly polluted water bodies. This is going to lead to more diseases.”

“But the onus lies on the citizens too,” he says adding, “they have to take every precaution that their homes do not become the breeding places for the mosquitoes, they have to be careful about the sanitation and hygiene in and around their houses.”
