Preliminary reports suggest that militants' attempt to cross the Line of Control was aborted in Kupwara's Machil Sector, more than 100 km north of Srinagar.

Initial reports suggest that the army fired at a group of infiltrating militants.

Army sources said the gunfight is on and one militant is killed so far. The army are also looking for weapons of the killed militant.

The Srinagar-based army spokesman has not put out any official confirmation on the bid and the number of militants killed.

The army claimed to have killed more than 30 militants this year near the LoC.
