Facing the heat from security forces at the Line of Control (LoC), militants have changed their infiltration strategy. They have shifted their focus on to the India-Pakistan international border (IB).
According to defence sources, effective mechanism along the LoC has forced the militants to step up infiltration on the border, guarded by the Border Security Force (BSF).
India shares 3,323 km, including 742 km LoC in Jammu & Kashmir, of its land border with Pakistan. The border runs along the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Punjab and J&K.
“We have increased our patrolling and placed surveillance equipment along the LoC. The existence of a strong mechanism has forced the militants to move towards the IB area,” the sources said.
“Their new strategy is to attack BSF border out-posts on IB and infiltrate under the cover of heavy fire,” they said.
A senior BSF official posted in J&K admitted that attempts by militants to cross over to India from Pakistan through the IB area have increased. These incursion bids have been reported mostly from Akhnoor, Samba and RS Pura sectors in the Jammu region, he said.
Sources said Pakistan was desperately trying to push militants into India and in the process has violated the ceasefire the two countries had agreed on in Nov 2003.
