“Warfare today has graduated into the information domain. Information assurance and dominance are therefore, the battle-winning factors,” said Lt-Gen Davinder Kumar, PVSM, VSM BAR, ADC. Management and exploitation of technology in consonance with operational requirements will be key factors and the biggest challenge for the Indian army, he said.

The Corps of Signals has taken rapid stride strides in establishing a world class Information Communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure and also acquired capabilities to negate the same with our adversaries through effective use of electronic warfare and signal intelligence.

The two major projects, Mercury Flash, a strategic broad-band satellite network and mercury streak a mammoth project involving laying of Optical Fibre Cable have been commissioned last year. Work on similar projects of laying Optical Fibre Cable synergising the efforts of the army and the BSNL are under implementation in Eastern Command at two locations. The signals have also completed the projects for the strategic backbone network and the Army Wide Area Network (AWAN). The AWAN will be dedicated to the Nation on February 24, 2006 by the President of India. At the formation level the Command Integrated Communication Networks have been extended down.

The corps has also been active in aid to civil authorities. Be it the Tsunami disaster or the recent earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir, Signalers were never found wanting. Providing communications during the inaugural Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service and live coverage of the event from the remote location showcased the versatility of the Corps. Corps of Signals has also contributed in sports. Havaldar K C Ramu did the corps won the Bangalore International Marathan last year. This apart Sigman Kanhayya Lal Yadav and Lance Naik Suresh Kumar of the Corps represented India in wrestling and hockey respectively. CHM Ghamanda Ram represented India country in Athletics at International-level.
