An inmate of the high security Central Prison in South Central Mumbai was killed and three others were injured in a clash after an argument between two inmates on Saturday morning, officials said.
John D'souza, an undertrial, was killed while three others have been taken to JJ hospital following the clash at circle no 6 in barrack no 4, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons), SP Yadav said.
Trouble started during washing of plates by inmates after their morning meal, when water from D'souza's plate fell on another inmate Sachin Shete leading to an arguing, Yadav said.
D'souza and Shete had a past enemity and in anger the latter broke the plate and used it to stab D'souza multiple times, he added.
Other inmates, who attempted to stop Shete, were also injured in the scuffle and three of them were taken to the nearby JJ Hospital for treatment.
"Shete has also sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical treatment in the jail. Appropriate action will be taken against him," Yadav said.
D'souza had a previous criminal history and had been in the jail since his arrest in 2001 by the crime branch of Mumbai police in a robbery case, he added.
