THE EFFORTS of the Additional Municipal Commissioner Raghvendra Vikram Singh to ensure opening of bank accounts of daily-wage safai karamcharis may yield only 50 per cent result. According to a senior official of the KMC, foul play by employees was the apparent reason behind the expected 50 per cent achievement.
The official said efforts to ensure bank accounts for daily-wage safai karamcharis was expected to touch the figure of not more than 450 out of a total 811 daily-wage employees. According to sources, the rest of employees were seemingly made up, resulting in financial losses to the KMC for the past several years.
Sources also said that after opening bank accounts, a probe was expected to be conducted against the ‘missing’ workers, which would, in all likelih-
ood, tame officials, who have connived for this loss to the KMC.
When contacted, AMC Raghvendra Vikram Singh said that about 110 bank accounts could be opened today, taking the tally of the total accounts opened today to about 350.
He also did not rule out a probe into the missing daily wagers. However, he refused to elaborate further. He also did not rule out the involvement of officials behind making up daily wagers.
He further said that inspectors at the KMC had earlier returned six cheques of daily-wage employees citing reasons that bank managers have refused to open the bank accounts. However, the fact was that their claim could not be corroborated, as there was no written comment from any of the bank managers.
He said all the six cheques returned by the inspectors would again be sent to the banks, so that accounts could be opened of these workers.
