An "intense" earthquake was recorded in the northern Philippines late Sunday, the Hong kong Observatory said.

It said the epicentre was in the southern part of the Luzon Strait, 510 km (325 miles) north of Manila.

The magnitude of the quake, in the vicinity of the Babuyan Islands, was estimated at 5.5 on the Richter Scale. It was not immediately known whether there were any casualties or damage.
On Saturday a quake hit the Indonesian island of Java to the south of the Philippines, killing some 4,300 people.
