The desire to own a latest Apple cellphone proved costly for a BPO employee when soap cakes arrived instead of the fancy phone.
Two conmen cheated an IT engineer in the name of selling an iPhone and fleeced him of Rs25,000. He ended up with two detergent soaps even after he convincingly saw the phone and tested it by using it at an authorised store to check its quality.
On January 2, a Wipro engineer was leaving his Sushant Lok residence to drive to work when two boys approached him offering him the latest iPhone 4s. As he already had plans to buy a new phone, he stopped and took the conversation forward.
"Two boys on a scooter approached me saying they noticed my Rohtak car registration number as they also belonged to a nearby town. They said they were working at the airport and sell electronics without custom duty. They offered to show two iPhone 4s models," Kamal Chawla, the victim, said.
After discussing the features, they convinced Chawla to buy the phone.
"Without wasting time, I asked one of the boys to come along till the MGF Apple Store. The salesperson at the Apple store said the iPhone 4s cost R44,000. They were offering two for Rs25,000 with proper original-looking boxes," Chawla added. Seeing a good deal, he decided to buy the phones.
"After they left, I tried to open the pouch but the zip did not open and I went to the Apple Store again where I found detergent soap cakes stuffed inside," he said. The police are investigating the matter and have taken CCTV footage from the store to nab the accused.
