"If there is a 180 degree change in US policy it would be a good thing," Iranian government spokesman Gholam Hossein Elham told reporters.

"I hope that it is true that the United States will revise their policies and leave the region in peace, that they renounce their belligerent policies and stop supporting terrorist groups," he said.

"This would be a good thing. If the United States does this, the problems would be solved," he added, without elaborating.

The Democrats' victory in congressional elections last Tuesday has prompted speculation in Washington over a radical change in US policy on Iraq, particularly after the resignation of Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

US President George Bush is to meet with a group of independent experts working on new proposals for Iraq today who are expected to recommend the US opens talks with Iran and Syria over how to stabilise Iraq.

The US broke off diplomatic relations with Iran in 1980 after the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran by Islamic radicals and ties have remained frozen ever since.
