This time, the ruling Congress had fielded its candidates for the post of president, general secretary and joint secretary, who secured third position in the elections, raising finger on the style of functioning of frontline leaders of the District Congress Committee.

The humiliating ouster of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), who contested the elections after over a decade, was indicative of that the District Congress Committee leaders had failed to establish and strengthen the base of the party at grassroots level, including the youth.

In Wednesday's elections, polling officer PS Chuahn, Joginder Chandel, CK Srikot and Kulwant Rai declared Raveena Negi of ISU elected for the post of president.

Negi defeated Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarathi Parishad's (ABVP) Himanshu Chaudhary by a margin of 32 votes. Pushap Raj of ISU defeated ABVP's Maneesh Kumar by a margin of 190 votes for the post of vice-president. Pushp Raj polled 534 votes while Maneesh secured 344 votes.

Terming today's verdict a clear mandate against the communal forces, ISU's campus president Prem Parkash expressing full confidence in the leadership of chief minister Virbhadra Singh, said the newly elected youth would soon meet the chief minister and would urge him to formulate specific policy for eliminating the unemployment that prevailed during BJP 's regime in the state.
