The attackers barged into the park last night and threatened workers employed in constructing buildings in the plots allotted to various IT companies. They then damaged a building and set afire vehicles near it, following which the Goa Auxillary Police (GAP) was called in, police said on Friday.

The force has taken control of the place.

People led by local legislator Antanasio Monserratte are opposing the setting up of the park at this plateau, contending it is "of no use to the locals."

Monserratte had earlier alleged corruption in allotment of plots in the park.

"The group warned us that we should stop the work immediately or they will burn the entire place," a contractor said.

The foundation stone for the park was laid by Congress president Sonia Gandhi in 2005.
