Repercussions of the intensive verification drive launched by the Gurgaon police are there for all to see — and smell. Garbage heaps can be seen piling up in private colonies following the large-scale exodus of sanitation workers.
Ahead of the Commonwealth Games, a drive to register all domestic helps and tenants forced more than a lakh workers to flee the city.
The garment exporters industry witnessed a sudden dip in production volumes after which the Manesar Industrial Welfare Association (MIWA) and Gurgaon Industrial Association (GIA) requested the police top brass to go easy on the drive as 30 to 35 per cent of their workforce had left.
Meanwhile, Gurgaon police commissioner SS Deswal reiterated that the drive to verify the antecedents of the migrant population would continue. "Many criminals have left the city and crime incidents have also come down. Any person without proper identity proof will have to leave. If industrialists, businessmen and contractors issue proper documents to their workers, then no action will be taken against them," Deswal said.

TN Kaul, secretary, resident welfare association, Ardee City, said the garbage dump has started inviting stray cattle and pigs, causing unhygienic conditions for the 2,200 families that live in the locality.
“We are living in a pitiable condition with foul smell spreading all over as the contractor appointed by the developer has not been lifting garbage for many days. When we contacted the company, officials said workers of the contractor had left the town because of the police verification drive last month,” he added.
HR Bangia, a resident, claimed stench filled the air and was getting polluted as the contractor had been burning garbage instead of dumping it in the solid waste management plant site in Bandhwari village, as has been directed by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon.
The Ardee City management, however, passed the buck to the contractor.
“We have issued a notice to the contractor for not meeting its obligation which he said was due to the paucity of workers. We have appointed a new contractor who will start picking up the garbage soon," said general manager SK Baweja.
The situation is similar in Sushant Lok. "We informed municipal commissioner RK Khullar who sent an engineer but garbage has not been removed from outside the gates of Block-C for the last 15 days," said PK Bhatia, RWA president.
