THOUGH BOTH Janata Dal (United) and Samajwadi Party share a common platform on ideological grounds, now they have decided to test each other’s strength on the political ground of Uttar Pradesh.

Veteran socialist leader George Fernandes, along with Janata Dal (United) stalwarts Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kumar, will launch a movement against the Samajwadi Party-led government. Apna Dal leader Sone Lal Patel has also decided to join hands with the socialists to dislodge the Samajwadi Party in the coming Vidhan Sabha election.

Though Janata Dal (U) and Apna Dal have decided to keep a distance from the VP-Singh led Jan Morcha, their target will be common—- the Samajwadi Party.

Talking to Hindustan Times, the Janata Dal (U) leaders said they would highlight the misrule of the Samajwadi Party government in public meetings. “No doubt George Fernandes had attended the programme organised by the Samajwadi Party in Lohia Park recently, but it was a mere gesture of Fernandes due to old socialist camaraderie he had shared with the SP leaders. Now he will expose the misdeeds of the SP government”, the leaders said.

Apart from a tirade against the Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal (U) will also focus on expanding its base in Uttar Pradesh. “After the national conference we have constituted the state unit and election of the district unit has been also completed”, Janata Dal (U) leaders informed.

To strengthen its base among farmers, youths and the labour class, the Janata Dal (U) leaders have decided to organise a dharna and demonstration on unemployment, price hike, law and order, death of farmers and long power cuts in various parts of the State. On June 19, the Janata Dal (U) will organise a dharna at all the district headquarters on the issue of price hike.

In Bihar, Janata Dal (U) has formed its government in alliance with the BJP. “We are yet to receive any positive response from the BJP in Uttar Pradesh”, the Janata Dal (U) leader said, “but we would not shy away from forming a joint front with the BJP if they come forward with a concrete programme and common agenda”, he added.
