WITH AN aim to deliberate on the measures to be adopted for extracting the optimum benefits in the field of biotechnology, eminent scientists, researchers and faculty members across the country will descend at Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (MNNIT) to attend the day-long workshop on 'Curriculum Development for Under Graduate Course in Biotechnology' on May 15.
Vice-Chancellor of Allahabad University (AU) Prof Rajen Harshe will inaugurate the workshop while Director of MNNIT Prof Arun Baran Samaddar will preside over it at MNNIT's seminar hall .
Informing about the workshop, MNNIT Director Prof Arun Baran Samaddar said that a country like India which is way behind many other major developing countries of the world can draw tremendous payback through advance research in biotechnology. He said that the next era will be of biotechnology and nano-technology and backwardness in these fields can cost dearly.
It is worth mentioning that MNNIT is the first among the NITs that will be starting courses in the field of biotechnology from the forthcoming academic session 2006-07.
Dr Triloki Nath, Head of MNNIT's Applied Mechanics Department, that is organising the meet, said that MNNIT is determined to focus on some of uncovered issues like bio-energy, exact health prescription for the patients and development of technology enabling physicians to suggest exact composition of medicines etc in the coming months.
Eminent scientists like VP Kamboj, President of National Science Academy, PK Seth, CEO, Biotechnology Park, Prof GS Randhawa, Head of Biotechnology department, Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, Dr Ashok Kumar, head of biotechnology, BHU, Prof Subir Kundoo, head of IT-BHU and PK Agarwal and senior scientist, Indian Institute of Pulse Research, Kanpur will attend the workshop.

Throwing light over the objective of the event, convenors of workshop, Sonia Varshney and SJ Pawar said that researchers and scientists will deliberate over the prospects, problems and opportunities in the study of biotechnology.
They will also suggest necessary additional features to be inducted and augmented in the proposed course. The experts are expected to come out with a blueprint of measures against issues like paucity of funds, inadequate infrastructure, quality of teaching and insufficient research personnel during the workshop.
